Well, you guys were right...not a garter. I finally managed to sneak my mother's A Guide to Texas Snakes out of her house (the pretty one with the Gray-Banded King on the cover) and looked the little guy up.

Don't worry, stainedfeathers, he's nonvenemous, despite his name. According to the text, they can be nasty and stinky if cornered. They eat frogs, small fish, and carrion; and the small ones get eaten in turn by herons and egrets. They live throughout much of the eastern US, and are especially abundant in the Mississippi River drainage. They often are misidentified as cottonmouths and killed.
